Pravian Imperium

Magic and Life

Magic

This world has magic. The magic comes from Pravus, and thus can be freely manipulated by him. Magic takes a big role in society, mainly in the cycle of life.

Magic can be broadly divided into two categories, and those are magical items and magic effects.

Magical items can be used by anyone, but it is very hard to create them.
More often than not, magical items will have a limited number of “charges” and after those charges are depleted, the item will revert back to being mundane. Some magical items can regain charges after some time, but truly permanent magical items are rare and expensive. A magical item can be literally anything, from an improved weapon or a piece of armor, to a utility found at home or an item that wouldn’t exist without magic in the first place.
Unlike magical effects, magical items require additional resources beyond the item you are enchanting.

Magic effects on the other hand are effects created by the skill of a person. Few can do this, as it requires borrowing power from the Lord to create the desired effect.
This category is mostly for spells, but Wild Forms and a decent number of Class abilities would fall under this category.
The process of activating magic itself is subtle, thus you may not be able to tell that you were a target of say a spell.
Magical effects also do not require any materials, only knowing the correct gestures and incantations (even if the incantation may be a roar).

Cycle of Life

The average citizen of the imperium upon death reincarnates into a new life.
When the person has lead an extraordinarily good or bad life, they are sent to the Radiance or Bangle fields respectively for a set amount of time.
Only the most exceptional get to enjoy/suffer their reward/punishment for eternity.

A select few are blessed by Pravus. Those gain the ability to resurrect. Said citizens can return to the circle of life & death only due to old age.
If they die due to any other causes, their body withers to dust and is reconstructed exactly 8 hours later at the altar they last prayed at, with the same possessions they had at death (the old equipment goes through the same withering into dust process as the body). Their soul then enters the body and life can resume.

Similarly, apostates have been cursed with (almost) endless suffering.
Their “spawn location” is a random place at least 10 km from the nearest intelligent being.

Souls

Having magic in the world has the nice side effect of making the soul a magical object in terms of spells that can detect and identify magical phenomena. It usually coalesces into an orb shape, but other shapes are common and well documented.

By examining one’s soul you can tell what social class they belong.
Normal citizens have a rather dull gray with random flashes of color that further dictate their personality.
The soul of an apostate appears tainted black and brown, and swivels around as if in flames.
The souls of clergymen have a vibrant and warm white color, which is often described as “comforting” & “calming”.
Inquisitor souls are equally as bright, but where the clergymen have care, they only have a lack of mercy, like cold ice piercing trough you.
And finally, looking at the soul of a Faith Keeper will blind you. Do not try this at home.
